Slice of Life Entry #21
What do these 3 things have in a common? On Sunday, I attended my cousin’s wedding here in Korea. Korean weddings in general are pretty different from the typical wedding in America. Many times they are pretty quick, taking only an hour or two.
The beaming groom stood at the aisle waiting for the bride. To my astonishment, two ladies (workers of the wedding hall) dressed in skirt suits and heels, held up two long silver swords, from the bride and father to walk underneath. As the beautiful bride (my cousin) in white was coming down the aisle holding on to her father’s arm, they made it about halfway through. When the excited and young groom started walking briskly down the aisle towards them.
Everyone looked with wide eyes, as it happened so quickly. He met them at the aisle. The whole crowd started laughing as he didn’t realize (or maybe forgot) to stay at the end of the aisle. The bride and father stopped as everyone continued to laugh. As they awkwardly managed to make it a little further down the aisle, then the groom took her hands.
Everyone had smiles on their face as they continued the short, but sweet ceremony. As they announced the married bride and groom to the audience, everyone clapped. Then, the MC announced that they were doing the cake cutting. They quickly pushed the tiered cake over from the side, and the fog started coming out from underneath the cake! The gleeful bride and groom cut the ceremonial first slice. More pictures and videos were taken. Then, they walked back down the aisle. The workers popped confetti (long strips of shiny metallic strings) towards the couple. 25 minutes later, it was over. The family and friends stayed in the ceremony hall to take photos with the bride and groom. While other guests went to go eat at the buffet hall downstairs. Just another typical Korean wedding!
Really nice pictures and interesting post. Is a shame that as you wrote, the ceremony is short. Congratulations to the new couple!
Love the fog machine!
Thanks for sharing both words and pictures. I enjoyed them!
It’s always fascinating to see how other cultures celebrate marriage. Thanks for giving us a glimpse. I always enjoy reading your thoughts from around the world.
What a beautiful bride! All cultures are so interesting. I love to learn traditions of other cultures.
